About Hahndorf

Australia's Oldest Surviving German Settlement

Hahndorf was established in 1839 when a group of Lutheran settlers arrived from Prussia, fleeing religious persecution. The town was named after Captain Hahn, the master of the ship that brought them to South Australia. Today, more than 180 years later, Hahndorf remains one of the best-preserved examples of a German colonial settlement anywhere in the world.

Walking the main street is like stepping into another era. The heritage buildings house artisan galleries, German bakeries, boutique shops, and award-winning restaurants. The smell of freshly baked strudel mingles with the cool Adelaide Hills air, and the hills surrounding the town are carpeted in vineyards producing some of Australia's finest cool-climate wines.

Our Hahndorf day trip from Adelaide combines the village experience with visits to Adelaide Hills cellar doors. The region is renowned for Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines - a very different experience to the bold Shiraz of the Barossa, and equally rewarding.

Historic Main Street

Over 180 years of preserved German-Australian heritage, with buildings dating to the 1840s lining the village's charming main street.

Boutique Cellar Doors

The Adelaide Hills is home to exceptional cool-climate wines. Cellar doors are intimate and personal, often poured by the winemaker themselves.

Artisan Food Producers

German-inspired bakeries, delis, and smallgoods producers make Hahndorf a food lover's destination. Try the local bratwurst, strudel, and handmade chocolates.

Stunning Hill Scenery

The Adelaide Hills provide a dramatic backdrop to the day - rolling green hills, towering gums, and vineyard-covered slopes visible from every vantage point.
